Finding the Right Niche
The stream asset market on Etsy is competitive, but most sellers focus on the same styles — basic emoji-style emotes or generic chibi anime characters. We went wider: cute kawaii animals (otters, cats, frogs, capybaras), dark cute horror (plague doctors, grim reapers, mothman), meme-inspired reactions, and themed packs (cottagecore, dark academia, RPG fantasy). The key insight was that streamers don’t just want emotes — they want a complete visual identity. Offering matching emotes, sub badges, and channel point icons in the same theme made our average order value higher and gave customers a reason to choose us over buying pieces from different sellers.
What Sells Best
Packs of 20-42 emotes in the €5-8 range consistently outperform smaller or larger sets. Single emotes under €2 rarely justify the listing fees. Large packs over €10 have higher margins but lower volume. Animal themes dominate — our top sellers have always been character-driven. A specific cute character with multiple expressions and poses performs better than a random collection of unrelated emotes. Grim Reaper, Otter, and Cat packs have been consistently strong sellers.
The Technical Side That Most Sellers Get Wrong
Every product includes transparent PNG files in all required sizes — 28×28, 56×56, 112×112, and 500×500 for preview. Files are organized in ZIP archives with clear folder structures. This sounds basic, but many competitors ship messy files or miss sizes. Getting this right reduces refund requests and earns positive reviews. We also include files that work across all major platforms: Twitch, Discord, YouTube, and Kick. One purchase covers everything — no need to buy separate versions for each platform.
Why We Built Our Own Store
Etsy is great for discovery and building credibility, but the fees add up and you’re always dependent on their algorithm changes. We launched uncommonunearthings.com as a direct sales channel — lower fees, full control over branding, and the ability to rank in Google for stream asset searches. The store has 340+ products with integrated Google Shopping and Pinterest for automatic product syndication, plus a blog covering streaming topics to drive organic search traffic. Having both Etsy and our own store means we’re not putting all eggs in one basket.
Advice for New Digital Product Sellers
Start with what you know and test fast. Our first listings weren’t perfect, but they taught us what customers actually want. Focus on quality over quantity — 20 great emote packs will outsell 200 mediocre ones. Price for volume in the sweet spot (€5-8 for packs of 20-40 emotes). Invest in professional mockup images — products with live chat previews and "see it in action" slides convert significantly better than basic grid layouts. And start building your own platform alongside marketplaces as early as possible.
